THURSDAY 22nd

Opening night of the 59th Melbourne International Film Festival.

Inception, the highly anticipated film from Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight), opens.

Greenberg, Noah Baumbach’s (The Squid and the Whale) tale of mid-life crisis starring Ben Stiller, opens. Features a soundtrack by LCD Soundsystem.

Skin opens. Set during apartheid in South Africa, this film tells the story of a black child born to two white parents and her rejection from white society. Soundtrack features solely vuvuzelas.

Leaving opens. It’s about Kristen Scott Thomas having a sexy affair with a younger, poorer man.

FRIDAY 23rd

Eighties fantasy double-bill at the Astor: 1987’s Masters of the Universe starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and 1988’s Willow starring Warwick Davis.

Ed Wood at ACMI. (Also screening on Sunday.)

SUNDAY 25th

Matinee screening at the Astor of Ernst Lubitsch’s The Shop Around the Corner (1940) starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan followed by Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life (1946).
