THURSDAY 25th

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the Swedish thriller based on the best-selling novel, opens.

The Melbourne Queer Film Festival finishes up this Sunday.

The Red Shoes, the 1948 dance drama from Powell and Pressburger (Black Narcissus), continues its extended season at Astor.

Labyrinth, the classic 1986 Jim Henson fantasy starring David Bowie, at Rooftop.

In the Zone, Blaine Cooper’s two channel video work and installation finishes its run at Rearview Gallery this Saturday

SATURDAY 27th

Preview screenings of Greenberg, the latest comedy from Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding), at Nova. Greenberg features a score from LCD Soundsystem and stars Ben Stiller.

SUNDAY 28th

Speakeasy Cinema presents Last Hope, a collection of short films inspired by the sea and set to music from Spunk (Sufjan Stevens, Dirty Three, Bonnie “Prince” Billy) at 1000 £ Bend. Check out Screen Machine’s interview with the co-creator of Last Hope, Andrew Kidman, here.

MONDAY 29th

Where the Wild Things Are and other Maurice Sendak Stories is a collection of short films created by the acclaimed children’s author and illustrator and screens at ACMI for 2 weeks.

TUESDAY 30th

Filmoteca presents Mariem Hassan: the Voice of the Sahara at ACMI. The film is a documentary on the iconic figure of contemporary Saharawi music.

WEDNESDAY 31st

Cinematheque presents an impressive program of short films around the theme of landscape. Check out the whole program here.

The Horror Film Society presents a double bill from Shinya Tsukamoto at Loop: Iron Man and Body Hammer.

A preview screening of Mother, the Hitchcockian thriller from Screen Machine favourite Bong Joon-ho (The Host, Memories of Murder). Mother made Screen Machine’s Best of 2009 list here.
