THURSDAY

Brothers, the war drama from Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father, Get Rich or Die Tryin’) starring Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman.

Cop Out, the buddy comedy from Kevin Smith (Clerks, Zack and Miri Make a Porno) starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan.

The 20th Melbourne Queer Film Festival begins.

The City of Lost Children, the dystopian fantasy from Caro and Jeunet (Delicatessen) at ACMI.

The Darjeeling Limited, the India roadtrip dramedy from Wes Anderson, at Rooftop as part of their Wes Anderson week.

FRIDAY

Withnail and I, the 1986 cult comedy from Bruce Robinson, at Astor with the film’s actor Paul McGann appearing in person.

The Day Before, the Jean Paul Gaultier documentary, at ACMI.

SATURDAY

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Wes Anderson’s ocean-going adventure/drama/comedy at Rooftop.

SUNDAY

The Red Shoes, the sumptuous 1948 dance drama from Powell and Pressburger (Black Narcissus), begins an exclusive 2-week season at Astor after a full restoration by the UCLA Film Archive and the Film Foundation.

Bandaged, a lesbian horror film/domestic thriller directed by Maria Beatty and executive produced by the great Abel Ferrara (!!), screens at ACMI with the MQFF. Film seems to be playing on the likes of Georges Franju and Jean Genet.

Rushmore, a comedy about a precocious teenager competing for the affections of an older woman, rounds out Rooftop’s Wes Anderson week.

MONDAY

The King of Escape, a recent French film directed by Alain Guiraudie, screens at the Greater Union as part of the Melbourne Queer Film Festival at 6pm. Conall saw it in Italy last year, and says it is “OK, kind of funny I guess.”

WEDNESDAY

Cinematheque presents Daguerréotypes, the 1975 social documentary on Parisian life from Agnès Varda (Cléo from 5 to 7, The Beaches of Agnes) and Bright Leaves, Ross McElwee’s personal documentary about North Carolina tobacco – Sam says this film is “awesome” and that it features “a great scene with noted film scholar Vlada Petric.”

Fear(s) of the Dark, the anthology animated film bringing together several acclaimed graphic novelists and artists, at Rooftop.
