Remember the catastrophe of 2001? You know, when Mariah Carey suffered a mental breakdown just before the release of the widely-panned star vehicle Glitter, a vanity project that seemed to prove that Mariah had finally reached a level of celebrity insanity that was rivalled only by Michael Jackson or Tom Cruise? Well… Mariah’s celebrity narrative is becoming a combination of the “Britney Spears Comeback” and the “Cameron Diaz/Charlize Theron Getting Cred Thru Deglamorfication” and it actually has me excited about seeing her new film. She’s playing a social worker for the main character: an illiterate, obese teen who is pregnant for the second time with her father’s child. The clip above is…surprisingly good. The film is called Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire (I’m guessing the longwinded title is to distinguish from the other to-be-released Push which is about magic people doing magical things) and it has won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Let’s hope that a Madman or a Hopscotch will pick this film up to screen for us Aussies.
